Animal House
At present, an animal house (500 sq. ft. floor
space) with heating and air-conditioning in the laboratory
complex of Biosystems houses the current population of small laboratory
animals. Additional stainless steel cages and room to house and multiply
experimental animal populations are available as a
particular project may require. Resources are also available on site
to construct exclusive, high-security, animal facilities of almost any size,
if required.
Greenhouse
A
3,000 square feet greenhouse with automated lighting,
heating, humidity and watering systems is available in close
proximity the site. Two environmental chambers with temperature,
humidity and light controls are available on site.
Laboratories
Eight laboratories of Biosystems occupy a space of approx.
5,000 square feet and are equipped to carry out most
investigations in the areas of biological and chemical sciences,
including bacteriology, biochemistry, botany, chemistry,
entomology, genetics, immunology, industrial hygiene,
microbiology, molecular biology, mycology, toxicology, virology
and zoology.
Major instrumentation includes laminar
biological and chemical safety cabinets, walk-in and bench-top
incubators, autoclaves, ambient and refrigerated centrifuges,
light phase contrast and inverted microscopes, atomic absorption
(AA) furnace, gas
chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC) columns and associated detection equipment,
homogenizers, refrigerators, freezers, liquid nitrogen freezers,
ovens, spectrophotometers (AA, Vis, UV, IR, MS), balances,
ion-specific cum-pH meters, water baths, automatic glassware
washers, soil, air and water samplers.
Equipment and instrumentation are also available to provide high
quality de-ionized and high purity, sterile, pyrogen-free
distilled water on a continuous basis.
A walk-in clean room,
walk-in incubation room, walk-in refrigeration room, an animal
house, a greenhouse, a darkroom for photography, a library and a
computer room are ancillary facilities.
Library
Literature search facilities are available in the
laboratory library, which subscribes to prominent scientific
journals of disciplinary interest. On-line computerized searches
are available through our in-house IBM computer connected to the
Internet. In addition, extensive library facilities of neighboring institutions, such
as Atlanta University, Centers for Disease Control, Emory
University, Fernbank Science Center, Georgia Institute of Technology,
Georgia State
University, Kennesaw State University, Mercer University,
Morehouse School of Medicine, University of Georgia and Yerkes
Primate Research Center are also available within convenient distances.
Our scientists maintain active collaborations with their peers at
many of these
institutions as well as other local scientific and engineering
organizations. Professional exchanges in the form of
local, national and international meetings, conferences,
seminars, symposia and workshops are also available to our staff and
consultants.
Information Systems
Apple, Compaq, Digital and IBM computers with data
processing, word processing and programming capabilities are
available in the office and are utilized for information
management, including data analysis, report preparation and
report submission. A local area network [LAN]
unifies and integrates computer systems together. In addition,
we have capability to network via internet with any work station
almost anywhere in the world via high speed DSL modems.
Pilot Plant
A 400-liter fermenter with automated process
controls is available for contract fermentation of bacteria,
fungi and preparation of mammalian cells. Usually, a 10-12 week
notice is needed to reserve a production run. In addition, two
bench-type fermenters (5-liter and 22-liter) with process
controls are also available in our laboratories. Facilities are also available for
growing, harvesting, concentrating and sonicating of cells as well as
for the extraction, purification and characterization of macromolecules
such as nucleic acids, proteins and enzymes. In addition,
pilot-plant manufacturing, including formulation, packaging and labeling
is also available for most biological products.
